As the ramifications of last week’s announcement regarding the Registration Scheme and Planning Changes for England start to hit home, here’s a round-up of some of the responses, next steps and status across related changes throughout the UK :

  • Dorset Councillors have approved plans to charge double council tax on second homes

  • A Written Question has been submitted to ask the Scottish Government what analysis has been undertaken of the potential impact of short-term let regulations on the Scottish tourism sector and visitor economy

  • A reflection of the proposed rules from the Rural Services Network

  • Labour MP slams Airbnb clampdown as “not going nearly far enough

  • A flat owner in Dirleton, East Lothian, who was refused permission to let it out for ‘short term’ use on the AirBnB website, has appealed to Scottish Ministers

  • Edinburgh council considers bin tax on Airbnb hosts

  • UK lender trials ban on new holiday let mortgages for tourist hotspots

It is worth highlighting that it is still early days and the mechanics of these policies will take months to be formed and implemented. As we recommended last week, we encourage you to join your appropriate association (E.g. PASC, STTA, ASSC) to support their efforts in working with the relevant government agencies.
